Start a Business in College

Starting a business while in college is one of the best things that any student entrepreneur can ever do. While in college, you are immersed in a world of contacts, friends, and information.

Yes, everybody wants to start a business nowadays, but how many students do you know that actually follow-through with their ideas? I personally don’t know many… maybe a few.

To me, the whole point of college is to network, interact, and attempt to find your true calling in life. For those of you who have found what you want to do in life, the next step is to actually do it!

Don’t be one of the “Blah…blah…blah…” student entrepreneurs who talk the talk but never walk the walk. If you have an idea, then implement it. If you have a vision, then make it a reality.

For me, most of the classes I took in college bored me. During my last years, I started taking internet and business course which really, really held my interest. It was great because I was actually able to talk about my business and share what I knew with the class.

My professors really appreciated the insight that I brought to the class. Point being, definitely take classes that will help foster your entrepreneurial mind – that’s what college is all about, networking, socializing, and spreading your knowledge.

For many of us college is a one time thing, so take advantage of it. Make the most of your time and start your first business if you haven’t already done so. It’s likely that the atmosphere of college and the interactions that you encounter will never be replicated again once you graduate – at least not like how you had it in college.

So yeah… have a blast in college, but also be smart and take risks by starting a business. One day you’ll look back at your college years and reminisce about the times when you were bootstrapping a business that eventually turned into something so great.

Starting a business while college is definitely the way to go if entrepreneurism is in your thing. One has very little to lose and if all else fails you still gain a huge network of contacts, you get to brand yourself, and you learn more about business than the next guy. So what’s there to lose?

Wow…that’s not good…. Did you ever consider talking to the Dean of your school about adding some?

Great point, Rohail. The only thing to lose is time… but you have the world to gain!

David, great post! I appreciate you being able to put something up while I am “out of the office” (aka either my basement or apartment) until Wednesday when I will be able to start posting again. The conference for PBL (http://www.fbla-pbl.org) that I am attending has been great and I have some blog posts that I am ready to share upon my return to my regular computer. Thanks again and great post!

    Great blog you’ve got here!

Here in Singapore, you also (sadly) see the situation where college students are purely content to have academic knowledge force-fed into them like the geese. They would run circles around you to quote you principles and theories from the books on why your next crazy idea won’t work. Great people to be around with huh?

I guess just going ahead and doing what drives you is the best approach to starting something great! Don’t lose much in doing so anyway and besides, its better to try out new stuff and fail while still young. That’s called experience. ;)

How do you come up with the business idea? I’d really like to try starting a dorm room business but have no good ideas.
