Join Dorm Room Biz in supporting the Relay for Life!

Written by Chris on March 26, 2008 – 8:06 pm -

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Alright everyone, I know this is completely off topic, but I wanted to give all my readers a chance to get active in a cause that I, Chris, and involved with at Radford University. Many times, I have mentioned an organization that I am apart of, the Collegiate Entrepreneurs, and now is a time where I will ask for your support!

The Collegiate Entrepreneurs organization has decided to team up with the Radford Relay For Life in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In doing so, members of the organization will be participating in activities on April 11th - 12th starting at 6 PM and going until 6 AM. During this time, our team as well as all the others, will be continuously walking around a track at the local recreation center. We are working on having local businesses donate money or pledge a certain amount of money for every lap that our team walks.

So, here is where you all, my readers, come in and get a chance to help. At the end of this post, and in the sidebar of the site, I have added a PayPal donation button for you to make a donation to our Relay For Life team, all of which will go to the American Cancer Society. I know there is not much time before the date of the actual event, so that is why I am reaching out to you all asking for your donations - anything is acceptable - $1, $5, $25, or more!

To make it a little more interesting, if donations can reach $25.00, I will also donate all of my earnings from CashCrate for the month of March, sitting at right now about $26.00. If the donations from readers reach $50.00 I will also donate another $25.00!

So I ask you and I encourage you all to donate anything that you may be able to to help support this great cause and our relay team! It seems like just about every single person has been touched by cancer is some fashion - through their parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives, or friends.

I look forward to seeing how much Dorm Room Biz readers can donate over the next couple weeks. At the end, I will also make a thank you style post to all those who made donations and link to their sites if they have one. So, if you make a donation, please include a link to your website in the comments box in PayPal.

Thank you to everyone in advance and I look forward to being able to make a nice donation to the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life on behalf of the readers of Dorm Room Biz!

Here is the donation button:

Just a quick update - I will be putting on an eBay workshop tonight at 6:30 PM on the Radford Univ. campus. The workshop will be held in the computer lab in the basement of Stuart Hall.

The workshop will be pretty laid back and give the participants a chance to really interact with eBay and ask any questions that they may have.

However, some topics that I will cover include:

  • What to sell
    • Deciding what to sell
    • Where to get products
    • Restricted products
  • Technical basics
    • Research on eBay
    • How to sell
  • Auction basics
    • Types
    • Fees
    • Pictures

Shoemoney’s Travel Tips – Some helpful stuff for the extreme conference attendee who is all over the place!

Written by Chris on November 15, 2007 – 11:57 am -

Incase you guys don’t follow Shoemoney’s blog, then you probably missed his recent post on his travel tips. I definitely think they are worth reading and sharing with others. Some of them may not apply to you but others are some good ones.

Always get 2 begs @ your hotel
Take some food
Get a fridge for that food
Make sure you hydrate
Just stay at the host hotel you cheap ass
Hangover recipe
Southwest Airlines A-B-C Seating
Learn how tipping works
Call your room number

I will attest to the idea of staying at your host hotel. Recently when I was in Atlanta, GA for a Delta Sigma Pi LEAD conference, we opted to stay at a members of ours parents house. She told us that she was close to the city and we wouldn’t have any problem getting to the hotel and back in a timely manner. Well, when it came down to it and we got the directions from Radford, VA to her house and then from her house to the conference hotel, her house was an hour away from the hotel. Although we saved about $400 on hotel rooms, we spent at least another $75 on gas driving to the hotel, around downtown Atlanta, and then back to her parents house. Not staying at the hotel also did not give us an easy place to change, take a nap after the conference, or just relax. We also missed out on the opportunity to meet, network, and party with other members of our Fraternity. So, the lesson learned here is that next semester we are staying at the hotel for sure!

Check out the tips given by Jeremy and feel free to comment with any of your own!

Weekend away in Atlanta, GA for Delta Sigma Pi LEAD Conference

Written by Chris on November 6, 2007 – 12:43 pm -

I had the wonderful opportunity to get away this past weekend. I was in Atlanta, GA for a Provincial LEAD conference for the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi. For those of you who do not know, DSP is a co-ed professional business fraternity for just business students.

The LEAD conferences are held around the country and give the collegiate members and alumni a chance to reconnect, enjoy a weekend of brotherhood, and also learn and discuss ways to better the fraternity. I am not going to preach about the benefits of getting involved on campus or joining a professional business fraternity, but I would strongly encourage it if you are a business student and there is a chapter of DSP at your school.

We came back with some good insights for our chapter and there are a couple things that I want to share with you all, so look out for some upcoming posts.

On a side note, Bobby has been working like crazy in his real world job and we both have not been able to post as much as we have wanted to about dorm room business ideas and other troubles young entrepreneurs face, so if you would be interested in joining Dorm Room Biz as a regular writer or a guest poster, feel free to contact me.

Entrepreneurial Summit Follow Up

Written by Chris on October 14, 2007 – 1:01 pm -

Alright, so here we are a few days after the Entrepreneurial Summit at Radford University so I wanted to share some follow up items and info about the event.

The Summit was a fantastic experience and actually went very smoothly and all most without a hitch. The event started off great with a panel discussion in the morning with Mason Gates, Angela Drummond, and Todd Gates. The setup for the discussion was set up sort of like the show “Inside The Actor’s Studio” and therefore named “Inside The Entrepreneur’s Studio. There was a lot of great discussion about how the entrepreneurs got started in their business, what has helped make them successful and pushed them to continue striving for their goals, what challenges they faced, and what pointers they would give to students. Unfortunately,Todd Gates had to leave us early after the morning session. He basically scheduled a stop in Radford, VA while flying in between COUNTRIES - after leaving us, he was on his way to Panama…the country, not the Florida city. Read more »

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past bit!

Written by Chris on October 8, 2007 – 9:41 pm -

I am sorry the lack of updates on the site for the past week or so, I have been incredibly busy with school related stuff and other activities.

Last week I attended an Entrepreneur Express Workshop in Roanoke sponsored by the City of Roanoke and a bunch of different organizations. I also had the opportunity to give a presentation to about 20 high school students about entrepreneurship and the different problems that I have faced over the past few years.

Coming up on Wednesday, we have our first ever Entrepreneurial Summit on campus which I have been planning for over the last year and it is finally approaching. After Thursday I will have more updates on how it goes!
