Have you ever gotten an annoying stream of re-tweets on your Twitter page from friends following a political issue? Or have you gotten fed up by all the “pokes” from another friend on your Facebook page? These are examples of bad social-media etiquette, and they can be annoyances that will make you consider blocking or hiding those friends. When you start a social-media profile for your business, making these missteps in etiquette can cost you potential customers. Learning some basic social-media etiquette will help you maximize your networking strategy to promote your start-up business and get started on the right foot. Here are a few rules to keep in mind:

Don’t Just Talk about Yourself and Your Company

Your intention may be to promote your product and your company, but even the most loyal fans will become turned off by your message if all they hear from you is self-promotion. You need to give your customers a reason to follow you and to remain active subscribers. Share value-added content with your readers that informs or entertains, such as relevant news stories or studies, tips they can use or project ideas. Knowing that content like this is available will make customers more likely to frequent your profile and to engage with your company.

Interact with Fans

Customers know when they are being seen as dollar signs — and they don’t like it. Show that you value your relationship with your customers and make an effort to engage with them. Respond to comments, post polls and encourage discussion on your profile. Ask for their opinions and respond in a thoughtful manner. Hold customer-appreciation promotions such as recognizing birthdays and other special events, highlighting fan profiles or offering random giveaways.

Control Spam

Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of viewing their social-networking profiles as an extension of their mailing list or ad campaign. In so thinking, these business owners are more likely to send out a lot of spam, including repeated mass e-mails or wall posts about events or promotions. Whether these are sent in a private message, posted on your profile or posted on your fans’ profiles, your customers will view them as spam. Remember to establish an opt-in e-mail list for these kinds of notifications so that only customers interested in receiving the information will get it. For all others, a few posts on your own profile will suffice to get the word out.

Also, be cognizant of monitoring spam that others may post on your wall. If you allow readers to share their own events or information on your profile, be sure that this is kept to a reasonable amount. If your profile is full of posts that are advertising a promotion or trying to sell a product or service — whether it’s your own or another’s — your customers will not be likely to remain subscribers to your profile.

Watch Your Posts

The number of posts that you should share in any given day varies, and there is no real formula for how much is too much and how much is too little. However, you should avoid the appearance of posting too often lest customers become annoyed, and you should avoid the appearance of posting too infrequently lest customers become bored. How do you know if your posts are appearing too often or too little? Monitoring interactivity from your customers is a good indication. If you are getting a lot of feedback, you are likely offering just the right amount of posts. If you aren’t getting any feedback, you’re either boring them or annoying them — either by the frequency or the content of your posts.

Remember that You’re a Business

There are plenty of ways for people to interact personally on social-networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Avoid these pitfalls and remember that you are a business promoting your brand, not a person trying to share your personality and opinions or to make friends. Don’t send out invites to games and other apps. Don’t use foul language. Don’t post links to political or religious items (unless that is what your business is about). Always maintain a professional demeanor and leave your personal preferences for your personal profile.

Social media is a powerful marketing platform for small businesses and corporations alike. However, young entrepreneurs must remember these and other important rules of etiquette in order to properly leverage the power of these platforms to attract and not alienate new clients.

Have you guys heard about Re-boost from Boost Mobile? First, I’m not sure how many people are apart of their network, but they are definitely smaller than Verizon, AT&T, etc but they’ve got some pretty cool features and phone plans that may start attracting new customers.

Boost Mobile has designed three simple phone plans to choose from, all with no contracts:

Monthly Unlimited – $50.00

Blackberry Monthly Unlimited – $60.00

Daily Unlimited – $2.00 per day

The Re-Boost feature that they’ve launched gives you flexibility for paying your account balances and adding funds to your account. You get three options for paying: you can pay via credit card on the site or set up automatic monthly payments, you can pay at a local re-boost station, or you can pay by phone. Another cool feature that they have? You can actually “gift” Boost Mobile service to your friends and family by adding funds to their accounts, which goes towards their bill. If you are looking for a gift that someone could really use for the upcoming holidays, helping pay for part of their Boost Mobile bill would be a pretty good one. I know I’d love it if someone helped pay part of my cell phone bill next month!

Besides their easy and convenient ways to pay your bills, Boost Mobile phones also set up extremely well for the social person. Facebook, Twitter, whatever it is, you can get it on your Boost Blackberry or phone. If you are a social media user like I am, and I know many of you are, then this is a great bonus for you.

I do most of my tweeting and Facebook updates from my mobile phone and Boost’s phones are social by nature and make it incredibly easy to make your status updates, tweet a funny joke, or share a picture of your friend picking his nose in the bar. Having that ability in my hand while I’m out and about is great and makes it easy to connect with others if the opportunity arises.

The best part? All your internet access and connectivity to Facebook and Twitter is covered in the low monthly priced plans that they have. So you don’t have to worry about going over your limit on data usage, text messages, or minutes.

Do any of you guys have Boost Mobile service? My cell phone bill is outrageous, this makes me want to re-evaluate it!

If you’re the student who has to step out of class to take a customer service call, this is for you. First, I applaud you. Keep doing it because you’re getting (in most cases) a better education than that of your class. While in school, I too was that student and found these tools to be extremely helpful. It provided an outlet to manage the companies Social Media brand, communicate via email and take diligent notes during meetings that can be easily referenced. There are tons of cheap, fantastic resources to manage your company. All of these tools are web based, free or very cheap and are fantastic project management tools:

Free

Navigate through multiple applications

Collaborate with co-workers (scheduling, documents & presentations)

Fantastic user interface

Free again!

Manage multiple social media accounts

Great customer service and prospecting tool

Segment people you follow by groups

Track metrics and statics

Save notes anywhere anytime: video, web clips, voice etc…

Not free, but only $24/mo for basic

Manage multiple clients on a central platform

Dead simple to use

Web based

Calendars, power points or to do’s all in one place!

Back up all files on your company for $5/mo!

Connect to WIFI and Walla

Secure & safe

I’ve found that one of the biggest challenges of starting a company in college is learning how to manage time effectively. There’s classes, homework, projects and oh yea…starting a company! The ability to prioritize and figure out what to do first is crucial. I’ve had a lot of trouble finding great accounting/invoicing software that isn’t a boat load of money. Freshbooks is an option but it’s primarily for invoicing, not accounting. I imagine these are only a few of the many great tools out there. I would love to hear some more recommendations, what do you use?

Now, here’s a great way to make money from twitter. I’m sure you guys have read about or seen the different eBooks and courses about Twitter Marketing and making money from twitter, so you can add this one to that pile but making money from Twitter just became easier than those others.

Izea, the company behind PayPerPost and Social Spark, have launched Sponsored Tweets – another Ted Murphy idea!

SponsoredTweets is similar to the other services Izea has in which you sign up as a “tweeter” and give SponsoredTweets access to your Twitter account through the API. Then as offers come in through their service that meet your criteria, you get notified by either a DM on Twitter or email and you can accept or deny them. Finally, you post the tweet to your account you get paid.

There are two ways to make money from Twitter when using Sponsored Tweets.

Charge Per Tweet – this is the amount that you want to earn for each tweet you send out. As an example, when I signed up for the service, my “CPT” was recommended at $3.33. You can obviously change this yourself or just let it roll. The starting rate is based on your Twitter account – number of followers, etc. Some people are reporting great pay outs from sponsors such as Shoemoney who reported $250 for posting a tweet about K-Mart.

Charge Per Click – this is the minimum you want to be paid when you being paid per click. Again, when I signed up, this was automatically set at $0.13 for each click. I’m going to leave it here to see how it goes.

Two types of offers

When you sign up, you have a choice to make about the types of offers you get – you either have the ability to edit or write the tweet/ad that you post to your account or you just have to post what the advertiser provides. But, the best part is that you can select to have either type of tweets, so you’re making your chances better.

Minimum payout is $50.00, which seems pretty high when similar services offer a payout of $20.00.

Anyway, I’ve signed up for the service and will report back how it goes. I suggest checking it out if you are into Twitter and social media, as well as if you have a pretty good following because you can quickly make some decent money from Twitter with little effort!

Click the bird to make it happen!

One of the problems I have is that I can never settle for a single business card design. Another issue I have is that I’m always trying out different companies when getting new business cards printed. So, I thought I’d quickly show off some of the new cards that I got.

However, the story really starts a couple weeks ago when I moved and posted a tweet to Twitter looking to connect with other locals in the area, entrepreneurs, and businesses. One of the companies that followed me was 123Print.com, an online printer similar to OvernightPrints or PrintPlace.

When I went and look at their website, I saw they had 100 business cards for just $3.95, a pretty good deal. Most places would charge you at least $9.95 for 100 cards, or you may not even be able to order that few. So I was happy with the price and wanted to try out the service.

One thing I have been doing for a couple years now is including in all the packages I send out for eBay or Amazon sales is including a business card that basically says ‘Thank You for buying from us’ and asks the buyer to leave positive feedback for us. I had been printing them on just regular business card stock that you get from your local office supply store. Yet the last batch of paper that I bought I was not happy with and just printed the cards anyway – the perferations for where the cards pull apart is not that good and would always tear. But, putting a half assed business card with torn edges was not a good representation of my business – nor should it be one of yours.

So I quickly uploaded the design to the 123Print.com website and within 5 minutes had my order placed. Well, the cards came and they turned out great. The service was incredibly easy to use and fast. The shipping time was decent (the shipping price was high – $7 for a very small and light box), but the cards turned out nicely.

Wow, things have been crazy! If you are not keeping up with me on Twitter, please follow me as this is the most up to date way to follow me!

Now, here are a couple quick updates with more to follow on them shortly.

First and most importantly, Courtney and I have moved. We moved into our first townhouse together and things have been nuts for the last week unpacking, hanging pictures, setting stuff up, etc. A full video tour, pictures and more to come soon. This has taken a large chunk of my time and has not let me do as much blogging as I would have liked.

This is my busy week at work – with the position I am currently in at work, this week (the first full week of the month) is the most busy as we work to close out the previous month and prepare a lot of different financial reports. Since I usually do most of my blog post writting while at my cubicle job, I haven’t had the time to do so. This will all change again next week when things slow down a little.

eBay sales have gone crazy! I had someone contact me through my HowardCountyeBay.com website about selling a lot of paintball and similar military gear for them on eBay. Over the last week we’ve sold about $500 worth of items with much more to still go, inclduing multiple paintball and airsoft guns. Taking pictures, writing descriptions and doing everything else related to auctions is time consuming. I hope to move most of the inventory within the next couple weeks. I guess that all told it should bring in over $1000 for the owner. If that sounds sweet to you, contact me and find out how you can clean out your closets and basements to make money!

And that’s about it. I’ve been getting up early, around 5:30 AM, to get ready and head to work since we moved further out west away from my job so it’s about that time to go to bed! Leave a comment and follow me on twitter to keep up and chat!

Oh, and last but not least, if you missed the $47 rate for 3DayMoney, it’s currently going for $67 rather than the full price of $97. Now is the time to buy it if you can. Read my post here at about the 3DayMoney program from David Risley.

Thursday night I went to a social media presentation in Downtown Orlando that was put on by Doterati. Doterati is an Orlando area based group of social media interested people. You can read more about the organization and see their upcoming events on their website www.doterati.com. They have a tweetup coming up [tonight] night which I am going to try to make it to.

Anyway, the presentation was about utilizing social media and a little bit on the side of social media consulting. One of the slides was titled “Do Epic Shit” and the idea was that you should be making big moves to get your self noticed on Twitter, the blogosphere, Facebook or wherever else.

I liked the idea of “Do Epic Shit” because it does not just apply to your social media and networking presence but to business in general. So I thought I’d make a quick video about it. I recorded this Thursday night after getting back to my hotel.

I’d love to hear your comments about doing epic shit and hustling to get your business out there and noticed!

Twitter. You know what it is right? You’re familiar with tweeting? I hope so…..if you’re not then you must be an advanced 4 year old who can navigate the internet but not type. If you are not on Twitter, you need to go and sign up for an account now.

Anyway, now that that is out of the way, you need to realize how powerful of a tool Twitter really is. With the chance to micro-blog, Twitter gives you the ability to quickly connect with your customers, interact with them, and seek out advice or comments. Not to mention all the networking that can come from it, the business relationships that you can build, and the fun you can have.

Twitter Is Instant Market Research

No matter what your product or service is, you can find someone out of 4+ million plus registered users on Twitter that would use it or have an opinion on it. Inviting people to try out your website and provide feedback is a great way to get first hand knowledge about your site. Sending free samples of your products to people you meet on Twitter is a great way to build buzz about your business as well as develop future customers. Ask a question on Twitter and you’ll get an answer. Find people with similar interests and use them as a research base. Whether you’re looking for someone to give feedback on your website, try a product, or just take a poll, Twitter is the perfect atmosphere to do it in and get the instant responses you need. This one alone could save you and your business hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Twitter Knows No Boundaries

One of the best things about Twitter is that it is on all the time, all day long everyday. So, no matter what you are doing or what time it is, Twitter is available and so are your friends/followers. There are so many applications that let you tweet from your phone, that you can always just be a couple clicks away from getting a response. In many cases, I have asked questions on Twitter via my Blackberry or before going to sleep and by the time I get to chance my responses a few hours later or the next morning, there are answers to what I was asking about. The chance to get such a variety of opinions and responses is something that every business person and entrepreneur needs to be utilizing.

Twitter Offers Business Opportunities

Twitteriffic, Splitweet, TwitAds, TwitterBerry, TweetDeck, TwitTip, the list continues. All these sites and services were developed off of Twitter. The opportunities that Twitter has opened up for entrepreneurs is incredibly vast and what is already out there is just the tip of the iceberg.

Social Media is the New Jesus

As students and entrepreneurs, I am sure that you are all on Facebook. By the way, connect with me via the Dorm Room Biz fan page. Anyway, you are also familiar with using social media sites besides Facebook like MySpace, YouTube, Digg, and more. So why are you not utilizing Twitter in the same manner? Whether you are using social media websites to connect with old friends, find clients, grow your business, or just have some fun, you need to add Twitter to the mix.

The Big Guys Are Using It

If for no other reason, you should be on Twitter because many of the major corporations in the world are using the service. Your location and industry does not matter. Everyone from Fox News, CNN, The New York Times, Zappos, Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Comcast, and so many more. Plus, it does not stop at just companies, many of the largest celebrities in the world are on Twitter including Barak Obama, Shaq, MC Hammer, Brittney Spears, and many more. Following some of these people and reading their tweets are interesting and fun.

Now, explain to me why you’re not on Twitter? If you ARE on Twitter, leave a link to your profile within the comments so everyone can follow each other.

You can follow me at @ChrisPund. If you’re interested in outdoor news, gear reviews, and my other website, TheGearHouse, then you can also follow me there @TheGearHouse.
