About

Helping the next generation of entrepreneurs turn big ideas into real businesses since 2005.

Welcome to Dorm Room Biz!

Whether you’re a college student looking to make some extra money, an aspiring entrepreneur with a great idea, or someone who simply wants to build something of their own, you’ve come to the right place.

Dorm Room Biz was founded in December 2005 with a simple belief: You don’t need a business degree, a big investment, or years of experience to start a business. Sometimes all you need is an idea, a little ambition, and a dorm room.

More than 20 years later, that belief hasn’t changed.

The Story Behind Dorm Room Biz

I started Dorm Room Biz in 2005 while attending Radford University in Virginia. At the time, I was a college student with a passion for entrepreneurship, constantly exploring business ideas and looking for ways to turn those ideas into something real.

I believed then, and still believe today, that college is one of the best times to experiment with entrepreneurship.

You have access to a built-in community of potential customers, opportunities to learn new skills, campus resources, and the freedom to experiment before taking on many of the responsibilities that come after graduation.

Dorm Room Biz became my way of sharing the things I was learning, discovering new business opportunities, and connecting with other students who wanted to do more than just work a part-time job.

Over the years, the website has covered hundreds of topics, including:

  • Business ideas and side hustles for college students
  • Starting a business with little or no money
  • E-commerce, online selling, and digital businesses
  • Marketing, blogging, and building an online presence
  • Managing money and growing a small business
  • Entrepreneurial success stories, lessons, and advice

The technology, tools, and opportunities available to student entrepreneurs have changed dramatically since 2005. But the fundamentals of building a successful business—finding an opportunity, providing value, attracting customers, and managing your money—are just as important today.

About Me: Chris Pund

I’m Chris Pund, the founder of Dorm Room Biz.

Entrepreneurship has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Both of my parents were entrepreneurs, so I grew up seeing firsthand what it takes to operate a business, work with customers, and make something successful.

By middle school, I was already experimenting with business ideas of my own. Over the years, those ideas included everything from snow shoveling and printing services to web design, eBay selling, and other small ventures.

In 2008, I graduated from Radford University with a degree in Business Management and Media Studies.

After college, I began a professional career in the defense contracting industry, where I’ve spent years working in business operations, pricing, cost estimating, and proposal development. That career has given me valuable experience in understanding how businesses operate, evaluate opportunities, manage costs, and compete for new business.

But I’ve never stopped being an entrepreneur.

Today, alongside my professional career, I own and operate The Gear House, an outdoor and tactical gear retail business.

Through The Gear House, I sell products online through my own e-commerce website, eBay, and live-selling platforms like Whatnot. I also travel to trade shows, outdoor expos, and other events to sell directly to customers.

Running the business has given me hands-on experience with just about every aspect of small business ownership, including:

  • Building and managing e-commerce websites
  • Sourcing products and managing inventory
  • Pricing products and understanding profit margins
  • Marketing and customer acquisition
  • Selling online, in person, and through live shopping
  • Managing expenses and deciding where to invest in growth
  • Using technology, automation, and AI tools to make business operations more efficient

Some of those lessons came from successes. Others came from trying something that didn’t work nearly as well as I expected.

And that’s one of the things I love about entrepreneurship: there’s always something new to learn.

Why Dorm Room Biz Still Matters

When I started Dorm Room Biz, smartphones were barely a consideration, social media was still finding its footing, and starting an online business often required building your own website from scratch.

Today, a college student can launch an online store, sell products through social media, develop an app, offer freelance services, or build an AI-powered business using tools that didn’t exist just a few years ago.

In many ways, it’s easier than ever to get started.

But figuring out what business to start, how to find customers, and how to actually make money can still be challenging.

That’s where I want Dorm Room Biz to help.

My goal is to make this website a practical resource for students and young entrepreneurs who want to turn their interests, skills, and ideas into something more.

That means sharing realistic business opportunities, useful tools, startup guides, marketing strategies, and lessons learned from real-world entrepreneurial experience.

I’m not here to promise that you’ll become a millionaire overnight or that every side hustle will turn into a full-time business.

I believe that building even a small business while you’re in college can teach you skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

You’ll learn how to solve problems, communicate with customers, manage money, take calculated risks, and adapt when things don’t go according to plan.

And who knows? That little business you start from your dorm room might become something much bigger.

Let’s Build Something

Whether you’re trying to make your first $100 online, launch an e-commerce store, develop a service business, or build the foundation for a future company, I hope Dorm Room Biz can help you get started.

Take a look around, explore the archives, find some inspiration, and most importantly, take action.

You don’t have to wait until graduation to become an entrepreneur.

Have a question, a business idea, or a story about something you’re building? I’d love to hear from you.
