When navigating the tricky world of work, why restrict yourself to the country in which you live? There are 195 countries to choose from, so there’s no need to limit yourself. If you are motivated enough, it is possible to land a job in any part of the world you choose.

As well as the opportunity to travel in exotic locations, there are numerous benefits to working internationally, all of which will help you throughout your professional career. These advantages include:

  • New cultural experiences: Working in a new country exposes you to different industry standards and practices that will broaden your horizons and make you better informed in your area of expertise. It will give you new perspectives on how to do business as well as expanding your professional network.
  • Resume enhancements: Your international experience will become a welcome addition to your resume and will likely impress future prospective employers. It shows that you are well-traveled and have broad experience in your industry, and may just tip the balance when it comes to applying for your dream job.
  • Character building: Leaving the comfort of home to further your career in a strange part of the world will be hugely beneficial for your character. It will give you an increased sense of independence and adaptability to new situations.

It’s clear that the benefits are numerous, but how do you go about finding a job in an unfamiliar country?

Look within your company

Finding an entry point into a foreign company can be difficult, particularly if you have contacts within the business. But an easier way to transfer your career internationally is to look for opportunities within your company. Many big firms, such as TSMC and Apple, have offices in several locations around the world. Find out whether your company does the same, and whether there are any jobs available in your region of choice.

Ask to go remote

If your company doesn’t offer international positions, there is another good way to move your career overseas. Schedule a meeting with your boss and convince them to let you work remotely. It might be a hard sell, but come armed with evidence and well-thought-out arguments to show how you could work just as effectively (or even more so) from a remote location and how it will benefit their business. If it works, you will be able to conduct business from a country of your choice and experience a far greater quality of life as a result.

Search for international jobs

In the event that you’ll be starting from scratch in your new destination, it may take a little more work to find the right job. International job boards are an excellent place to start, as you can filter the vacancies by categories such as your skills, languages, and region of choice. Social media and job fairs are also valuable sources of information, and you could show some initiative by contacting companies you like the look of.

Finding a job in another country won’t always be easy, but with hard work and diligence, there is a good chance you will be able to make it work.
