With more cars than ever on the roads, and more road traffic accidents and drivers who flout the rules, traffic control businesses must be in action too. The traffic control industry is snowballing, and you can be part of that network that keeps pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users safe.

Here is how you can start your own road traffic control company.

Learn

Starting any company will require the owner to do some learning. You’ll need to locate some road traffic courses, usually found in the state’s transportation department. Some courses are longer and more intense than others, but they will give you the skills you need to understand traffic re-direction, management during construction, and the standards of traffic control.

Research

Get familiar with all of the companies in the area that offer the services you will be offering, and get prices too. This will give you a good idea of the price bracket that you will need to compete against. Going in too low can mean you tank the business and can’t pay your crew; going in too high and you might price yourself out of the market entirely. Make sure that you know what people are charging.

Registration

You will need to register your company and name with the state that you passed your road traffic control examinations. You’ll also need to register your company with the secretary of state too.

In almost all cases, you will be asked to provide proof of your examinations and scores.

Certification

This will depend on the country and state you are in, as not all require road traffic control companies to be certified. However, during your course and examination, you will find out if you need to be certified.

Certification usually shows that you understand the traffic rules and regulations locally.

Tools and gear

When you have all of your registration papers and certification, it is a good time to start purchasing your tools. You’ll look at cones, signage, and road safety equipment. You will need to purchase the exact ones that are outlined by the local state. Be aware that every state has different requirements for cones, signage, crew uniforms, and more.

Technology

There are a lot of different options for technological partners, hardware, and software – you’ll need to study and learn about what makes the best impact. What you choose will be based on the traffic you will control. School crosswalks, pedestrian crossings, or huge intersections will all need some level of intelligent traffic control.

You will be advertising to construction companies and other similar companies who need road traffic controllers for their projects. Advertise with the Chamber of Commerce, but make sure that you are aware of all of the funding and projects that are coming up in the next few years so that you can pitch early for the work.
