The need for businesses to go green has never been higher. Between plastic crises in the ocean and habitats disappearing due to industry run-off, green energy and green initiatives are fast becoming a staple in the workplace. Thankfully if you wish to go green there are plenty of ways to do so that are simple to implement and easy to maintain. Not only do some of these save energy, but they also save money as well, meaning its a win-win for both you and the environment.

Waste removal

You can start simply by overhauling your methods of waste removal to include separate bins and areas that take specific types of trash before they are sent for recycling or destroying. Look into your local cities or towns strategy and legislation on recycling and waste removal. They may already have policies you weren’t aware of. This not only helps towards your overall recycling standards but helps to ensure you comply with local laws as well.

Put a green policy in place

Write out a green policy for you and any potential staff to follow. Include items in it from separating waste correctly to turning off lights in rooms that aren’t in use. Should you be lucky enough to have multiple rooms, that is. Make sure you all understand what you are responsible for and why you are doing it. The “why” is very important for many people. Knowing the benefits greatly increases their chances of complying.

Pass it on to customers

There are plenty of innovative ways to help spread your companies green policy to your customers as well. If you package and ship items as part of your business model, then why not look into reusable packaging such as Plastic Packaging Technology’s compostable packaging. Fresh and unique methods of being green are the kinds that stay with both your employees and your customers.

Change the lights

Spend a few hours changing any lights you have access to from old fashioned fluorescent bulbs to newer and more energy-efficient LED bulbs. LED bulbs will run at a fraction of the price of regular bulbs and are much longer-lasting. Not only do they cost less to run but they also much brighter as well. Meaning you can use less energy to brighten much more space.

Eliminate plastic

Plastic is a huge source of environmental concern across the world. Especially in the days of so-called “plastic islands” that float in the ocean causing havoc in local eco-systems. Make the conscious effort to eliminate as much excess plastic as possible. Cut down on handing out plastic bottles to staff and lower plastic strapping on your packaging. Try using paper tape instead of using regular sellotape. Remember the little things add up to make a huge difference.

Above all keep in mind that going green is a mindset and an attitude. It isn’t something you do just once and forget to do again. You must make a conscious effort to improve and refine your green initiatives if you want to continue making a positive impact on the environment.
