As I mentioned over a week ago, I was away all this past week on Spring Break. I had the opportunity to take a cruise with my fiancé as well as a couple of our really good friends. The cruise lead us from Charleston, South Carolina down to George Town, Grand Cayman, over to Cozumel, Mexico, to Key West, FL and then back up to Charleston. I just got back yesterday, Saturday, afternoon and have been trying to readjust to the cooler weather, there not being any rocking back and forth of a ship, and having to cook my own meals – plus I have a mound of laundry to complete. Oh well, so goes it when you take a week off of everything and try to relax as much as possible.
The afternoon/evening of the day we boarded the ship and the following two days were spent at sea making the trip South. We had great weather, perfect sunshine, and lots to drink – a great combination indeed!
Tuesday brought us to the city of George Town in the Grand Cayman Islands. Here we took part in an on-shore excursion put together by our cruise line. We headed off to part of the Seven Island Beach where we kayaked about a mile, did some snorkeling, and then kayaked back to the beach. After the kayaking and snorkeling, we headed back to the port, walked around a little bit and grabbed some lunch. We headed back onto the ship and were off to Cozumel, Mexico.
We had a good portion of the day to spend in Cozumel and took advantage of it. Instead of doing an excursion, my fiancé and I decided to just kind of walk around, explore, and shop throughout the city. We hit all the normal tourist trap stores, got pulled into many jewelry stores selling the same exact items, and picked up a couple small souvenirs. We also headed into a McDonalds in Cozumel for a little bit of a early afternoon snack and then got some appetizers and drinks at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville.
After boarding back on the ship at Cozumel, we headed off to Key West for Thursday. We were in Key West from about 4 – 9 PM and that was enough time for Courtney and I to see some of the different sites that she wanted to – Earnest Hemingway’s house, the Key West Lighthouse – and also to check out the many different bars and hot spots along Duval street. We also spent some time in Mallory Square for the amazing sunset and performers.
Friday we spent at sea on our way back up to Charleston where we landed early Saturday morning and disembarked around 8 AM. Since we were not in much of a hurry to get back to Radford, we drove around Charleston some to see what the city was like and then got on the road.
The cruise was a really great trip and it was a lot of fun getting to check out a couple different cultures and see how much other countries (Grand Cayman and Mexico) rely on the tourists and cruises to keep their economy alive. For pictures, check out a few below or over to Flickr!
Any one else do anything for spring break? I’d love to hear your stories.
