When you run a small business, one of the most important things you need to do is to manage your employees effectively so that the workplace is harmonious and everyone gets along.

When you have a rebellious employee in your midst, it can stir up trouble and cause wider discontent within the company, so it is really important that you do whatever you can to manage them as effectively as you can.

With that in mind, here are some top tips for managing your rebellious employees right now:

1. Talk to an employment lawyer

If your rebellious employee is giving you cause for concern, it is often worth talking to local employment lawyers to see if there is anything you can legally do to make them comply or to ensure that you have done everything by the book so that they have no cause for complaint. Employment lawyers can help your employees with things like worker’s comp, but they are also a valuable tool that helps you gauge what you can and cannot do in regards to your rebellious employees.

2. Give them clear goals

Before you blame a rebellious employee for under performing or causing a fuss about their workload, it is always worth checking that you have given them very clear goals to follow. Many employees are rebellious only because they do not understand what they are supposed to be doing or do not have any clear metrics to measure their and others’ performances by. More often than not, clear goals will solve the problem

3. Talk to them

Talk to your rebellious employees in a calm and caring way and try to get to the bottom of what is causing their behavior. It might be that they feel justified to aft the way they are because they think that you have been helping too much work on them or because they feel like they did not get enough credit for that project they put a lot of work into. If you can work out why they are behaving the way they are, you can more than likely come to an agreement that will make you both happy and make their rebellious behavior stop.

4. Take action

If things do not improve then you need to take action against rebellious employees for the sake of everyone else in your office. Rebellious staff can cause real disharmony, do you need to nip their behavior in the bud. You could do this by moving them to another department, giving them an official warning or if they cannot get on board with your goals and values as a business, you may eventually have to fire them, but you should try to solve the problem first, of course.

As you can see, managing rebellious employees can be challenging, but it can also be done, and the sooner you deal with any issues that arise in your workplace, the sooner you can restore equilibrium, ensure your employees have a safe and nourishing place to work and improve your company’s productivity too.
